Saenghwang

Saenghwang is a wind instrument made by pinning 17 bamboos to a calabash.  When air is blown into a hole on the side of the calabash, it vibrates metal sulfur attached to the tips of the bamboo pipes, which in turn make sounds by echoing through the pipes.  There are ¡®woo¡¯ and ¡®hwa¡¯ with 36 and 13 pieces of sulfur respectively.  Saenghwang is the only Korean traditional musical instrument that can generate two or more musical tones at a time, and this is called the
Ssangseong-jubeop (binary sounds technique).  It was used often in duets with danso. Saenghwang dates back to the Three Kingdoms Period, and was used until the Joseon Dynasty
under King Yeongjo.  The illustrations of the musical instrument and its methods of playing are described in Imwongyeongjeji as compiled by Seo Yu-gu during King Sunjo¡¯s reign.
